Campaign postcards should land before early voting opens on Sat 24 Oct, not just before Election Day on Tue 3 Nov. As of Tue 13 Oct, that early-voting target has passed for standard printing and Marketing Mail. A campaign that approves its proof now can still reach voters before Election Day with rush printing and First-Class postage.
This article is part of our guide to how to create a direct mail campaign.
What are the key dates for the 2026 New York election?
Three dates drive every political mail plan in New York this year. Sat 24 Oct is both the voter registration deadline and the first day of early voting. Early voting runs from Sat 24 Oct through Sun 1 Nov. Election Day is Tue 3 Nov 2026, with polls open from 6 am to 9 pm.
Early voting changes the target. A voter who casts a ballot on 24 Oct has already made a choice. A postcard that arrives after that cannot change the vote.
So plan for two targets. The first is the opening day of early voting. The second, and the final deadline, is Election Day.
Postal holidays matter too. There was no regular delivery on Mon 12 Oct, Columbus Day. Wed 11 Nov, Veterans Day, is also a postal holiday, but it falls after the vote.
How long does political mail take to arrive?
It depends on the postage class. USPS Marketing Mail typically arrives 3 to 10 business days after it enters the mailstream. That range is typical, not guaranteed. First-Class Mail has a service standard of 1 to 5 days. USPS calls timely delivery of Political Mail essential, but it publishes no fixed day count for it.
Political Mail does not come with its own delivery clock. The USPS 2026 Postal Bulletin notice on Political Mail stresses timely delivery. It does not promise a number of days.
Plan with the slow end of each range. Do not build a schedule around 3-day Marketing Mail. If you plan for 3 days and the mail takes 10, your postcard can arrive after a voter has already voted early.
When the calendar is tight, the shorter First-Class window is the one that fits.
How long does printing take before political mail can be mailed?
At CRST, standard production takes 10 to 14 business days from proof approval to the post office. Rush production takes 5 to 7 business days for time-sensitive mailings. The clock starts when you approve the final proof, not when you first ask for a quote. Add that time to the delivery window before you pick a date.
Production covers more than printing. CRST prints the pieces, presorts them and takes them to the post office with the postage paperwork.
A change after approval means a new proof. A new proof means a new start date. Lock the design, the copy and the mailing list before you sign off.
Some committees need the union label, also called the union bug, on every piece. Say so before the proof stage, so the label is on the proof you approve. CRST prints union-label materials; the details are on its page about union printing for political campaigns.
What is the political mail timeline for 3 Nov, working backward?
Work backward from the date the mail must land. Subtract the delivery window, then subtract production time. For Marketing Mail to reach voters by Election Day, the drop date is about Tue 20 Oct. With standard production, that meant approving proofs between about 30 Sep and 6 Oct. The drop date assumes the slow end of the delivery range.
The table below counts business days as Monday to Friday. Dates marked “passed” are shown so you can see where the standard schedule sat.
| Milestone | Date | What has to be done |
|---|---|---|
| Proof approval, standard production, Marketing Mail for Election Day | About Wed 30 Sep to Tue 6 Oct (passed) | Approve the final proof so 10 to 14 business days of production finish by about 20 Oct. |
| Marketing Mail drop to land by the first day of early voting | Mon 12 Oct, a postal holiday, so in practice earlier (passed) | Mail had to enter the mailstream 10 business days before Sat 24 Oct. |
| Rush proof approval | Wed 14 Oct | Approve the final proof and supply the final mailing list. Rush production runs 5 to 7 business days. |
| Last Marketing Mail drop for Election Day | About Tue 20 Oct | Works only if the pieces are already printed. Allow up to 10 business days for delivery. |
| Rush production done, First-Class drop | About Wed 21 to Fri 23 Oct | Attach Tag 57, check the “Political Campaign Mailing” box on the postage statement, and mail at First-Class. |
| Registration deadline and first day of early voting | Sat 24 Oct | Voters begin casting ballots. Mail that arrives later can miss early voters. |
| Early voting ends | Sun 1 Nov | Last day of the early voting period. |
| Election Day | Tue 3 Nov | Polls open 6 am to 9 pm. Mail arriving after this date is wasted. |
What if you’re starting today, 13 Oct?
You can still reach voters before Election Day, but not with standard production and Marketing Mail. Approve your proof on Wed 14 Oct. Rush production of 5 to 7 business days finishes about 21 to 23 Oct. Mail at First-Class, which has a 1 to 5 day service standard, and the postcards should land before 3 Nov.
Skip Marketing Mail on this schedule. A drop on Wed 21 Oct plus 10 business days reaches Wed 4 Nov. That is the day after the election.
Be clear about what this path misses. Mail dropped on 21 to 23 Oct can arrive after early voting opens on Sat 24 Oct. Voters who cast ballots that first weekend may decide before your postcard reaches them.
Have three things ready before you approve the proof:
- The final design and copy, with no open edits.
- The final mailing list.
- A decision on whether the pieces need the union label.
How do you mark political mail for the post office?
Political Mail is marked twice. A red container tag, Tag 57 “Political Campaign Mailing,” identifies it when it enters the mailstream. The mailer also checks the “Political Campaign Mailing” box on the postage statement. Both steps are described in the USPS 2026 Postal Bulletin notice on Political Mail.
The Postal Bulletin also defines who is sending the mail. A Political Campaign Mailing comes from a registered candidate, a campaign committee, or a committee of a political party.
A Political Message Mailing is different. It comes from a PAC, a super-PAC, or an organization doing issue advocacy or voter mobilization.
Know which one you are before the paperwork is filled in. Do not skip either marking step. When CRST presents a campaign mailing at the post office, it handles the Tag 57 paperwork as part of the drop.
FAQ
When is the last day to mail political postcards for the 3 Nov 2026 election?
With USPS Marketing Mail, drop by about Tue 20 Oct, because it typically takes 3 to 10 business days to arrive. With First-Class Mail, which has a 1 to 5 day service standard, a drop on 21 to 23 Oct should still land before Election Day. Mail that lands after Sat 24 Oct can miss voters who vote early.
Does USPS deliver political mail faster?
USPS calls timely delivery of Political Mail essential in its 2026 Postal Bulletin. It does not publish a fixed number of days for Political Mail. Plan with the times for the class you mail at: 3 to 10 business days typical for Marketing Mail, and 1 to 5 days for First-Class Mail.
What is the difference between a Political Campaign Mailing and a Political Message Mailing?
A Political Campaign Mailing is sent by a registered candidate, a campaign committee, or a committee of a political party. A Political Message Mailing is sent by a PAC, a super-PAC, or an organization doing issue advocacy or voter mobilization. USPS uses these two terms in its 2026 Postal Bulletin notice on Political Mail.
Should campaign mail arrive before early voting or before Election Day?
Aim for the start of early voting when you can. In New York, early voting opens Sat 24 Oct 2026 and runs through Sun 1 Nov. Mail that arrives after a voter has cast a ballot cannot change that vote. Election Day, Tue 3 Nov, is the final deadline, not the best target.
